Characters
Each of SWAT 3's 200 characters began as sketches made from descriptions outlined in the game's original design document. In the early part of the design process, the physical traits of each of each character would sometimes evolve to fit a particular personality.

Surroundings
Several of SWAT 3's missions take place in replications of actual buildings — but all of the game's locations were designed to evoke the feel of real places. The involvement of a designer with an architectural degree assured that the interiors of the fictional buildings feature details so realistic they could pass building inspection.

Look closer and you'll notice small details. Many of the textures and objects were created from photographs taken in Los Angeles County. Even the graffiti on some of the walls was lifted from photographs taken in Venice Beach.

The locale sketched for each mission was based on the specifications of the design document (below). After several revisions, the establishing shots (or skyboxes) were rendered in 3-D for the game.
