Police Quest 3: The Kindred (1991)
In Police Quest 3, Police Detective Sonny Bonds returns to investigate a vicious attack made on his wife, struggling to keep his temper in check in the most authentic, brutal Police Quest game thus far.
Instead of cartoon-like 16-bit color graphics (as in Police Quest I and II), live actors in 256-color VGA resolution were used to create what Sierra described as a full "cinemagraphic experience."
To create the game, dozens of actors were recorded in Sierra's state-of-the-art video capture studio before a blue backdrop screen. These images were reduced to 256 colors and edited by hand, one frame at a time, before being placed on top of hand-painted in-game backgrounds.
Sierra's digital video capture equipment, cutting-edge at the time, was able to capture only 16 cels of movement per take, yielding only 5 seconds of usable footage that had to be tediously edited together to provide the effect of continuous motion. Despite the limitations, the game was Sierra's most ambitious use of full motion video at the time, laying the groundwork for such games as Phantasmagoria and Police Quest IV.
