From the Producer
Close to two years ago, Tammy Dargan and I sat down to discuss how we could create a realistic tactical simulation computer game. We wanted to make a game that accurately reflected what it would be like to participate on a LAPD SWAT entry team.
From our previous experience with members of the tactical community, we knew that we needed unique features to make the game a truly realistic tactical simulation. We brought in some core staff members to help define how we could implement our ideas into a computer game.
We knew that we had a Herculean task ahead of us. While the game's design was in progress, a state-of-the-art game engine had to be built to support the features and style of tactical capabilities we envisioned. System Architect and Lead Programmer Jim Napier jumped at the challenge, building SWAT 3's engine from the ground up. We also brought in Sierra veteran Cyrus Kanga as Art Director and John D. Anderson to design our artificial intelligence system.
To make the game as realistic as possible, the team spent a considerable amount of time in LAPD SWAT training exercises and classroom sessions. Our long relationship with LAPD, dating back to 1993's Police Quest 4, has given the team many close-contacts with key members of LAPD SWAT, as well as other members of the tactical community.
Former LAPD Police Chief Daryl F. Gates and 23 year SWAT veteran Ken Thatcher served as tactical consultants on SWAT 3, and it would have been impossible to include the level of detail and realism in the game if it wasn't for their shared real world experiences.
Since that time we have brought in additional team members which include a full array of programmers, 3D artists, animators, modelers, musicians, testers, public relations people, and a marketing staff. The SWAT 3 team has now grown to over 25 developers. It's been a combined team effort to get us to the point where we currently are, and I want to thank everyone who has helped in the development of this game.
The team hopes you enjoy SWAT 3.
