Quest for a Grammy: Quest for Glory V Composer Leads Effort for New Awards Category
September
22, 1998 Last
week the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS), the group that
administers the yearly Grammy awards, have scheduled a summit to further investigate
creating a new awards category for music in an interactive game. The meeting, which will
include ten of the game industrys top music professionals, is the first time that
NARAS will seriously consider adding a gaming music category. "This is extraordinary," says Chance Thomas, a senior music producer at Yosemite Entertainment and architect of the Grammy campaign. "We have an opportunity to make our case directly to the top leaders of the Academy. You could not ask for a better audience than that." Last winter, Thomas eighty-page proposal for the new category was the first to be seriously considered by NARAS. Several other proposals have been submitted since 1990, but were never given serious attention. The December 11th meeting will lay groundwork for a game music study committee, a Recording Academy symposium on the interactive arts, and a possible CGDC panel. If the current proposal is approved, the first Grammy for interactive games will be awarded at the 41st Annual Grammy Awards in the year 2000.

Dragon Fire at DragonCon |

ATLANTA,

attendees of DragonCon, America's largest annual fantasy and roleplaying convention, in
Atlanta earlier this month. Babylon 5: Space Combat Simulator producer Ken Prugh and Product Evangelist Tony Hernandez had the honor of sitting on several panels at the three day conference. At the Future of PC Gaming panel, the upcoming massively multiplayer game Middle-earth was a popular topic of conversation. Gamers staked out the Sierra FX booth to play the current top seller SWAT 2 and to check out pre-release versions of Quest for Glory V and Babylon 5: Space Combat Simulator. The Sierra FX booth remained open for nearly 24 hours a day during the conference due to fan request. Quest for Glory programmer Scott Howell marveled, "I think there were some people that stayed in [DragonCons] game area for the entire three days of the conference."

Quest for Glory V Recording Session
NORTH
HOLLYWOOD, CA August 21, 1998 Dragon Fire producer Jay Usher,
designer Lori Cole, and sound designer Craig Denny concluded a four day pick up recording
session at Score One Studios today. During the session additional lines were recorded and new actors were brought in to enhance 10 of Dragon Fires 50 speaking characters. Among the new talent is German-born Arianna Weil, who stars as the voice of Elsa, and Michael Sorich, the voice of Ferrari. Sorich, who hails from native Greek family, also provided Silmarias guards with an authentic Greek accent. Quest for Glorys initial 3725 lines of dialog (totaling approximately 10 ½ hours) were recorded over a year ago in the summer of 1997. According to Usher, small changes in the story made during the past year of production made it necessary to change "anything that didnt work within the context of the current game." "Each day [during the pick-up session], as each actor read their lines, they were
encouraged to experiment with their voice tonality and inflection. Sometimes even
deviating from the script." said Usher. "Im very impressed by the
results." ![]() |
