Game Play

How large of a game is Quest for Glory V?

Dragon Fire is a far more complex game than the team realized when starting the project. It is the most complex Quest for Glory game so far, and the most beautiful. Because it is a role playing game, the player can explore freely, encountering events in any order. The game is designed to be open ended and flexible, which adds to its complexity. Exploring the Kingdom, and completing the Rights of Rulership promises to immerse the average player in weeks of exciting gameplay.

There are some rather large differences between the original QGV demo on the Soundtrack album and the version of the game that showed at September’s ECTS.

Rigorous playability testing has resulted in a new full screen interface, in which the traditional border drops away and the interface becomes a simple toolbar at the bottom of the screen. This full screen mode really draws the player into the game. The interface is designed to interfere as little as possible with game play. The Dragon Fire interface is an evolution of a long line of previous Quest for Glory games and Sierra Adventure titles. Even with 16 bit color and an integrated real time 3D engine, the game is immediately recognizable as a classic Sierra adventure game.

How involved is the plot?

A paladin faces off against two Roman Invaders. Like all Quest for Glory games, the plot in Dragon Fire is critical to game play. Lori Cole’s games rely heavily on a complex and intriguing story that builds as the player explores the game. Lori’s game also contain an interwoven back story that refers all the way back to Quest for Glory I: So you Want to be a Hero?

How different is the plot between character types?

Dragon Fire remains true to the role playing genre. The player is allowed as much flexibility as possible to make decisions within the game, and to experience the world, but is also presented with a believable fantasy environment with engaging characters, and the elements of a good story in place for the player to discover and become involved in.

How is this managed?

The plot remains largely the same whether the player chooses a wizard, warrior, or thief, but challenges in the game must be solved in a different manner for each character type. A thief may collect money by pickpocketing townspeople, while a warrior gathers wealth by killing monsters. A wizard will defeat monsters with spells, while a warrior will concentrate on hacking them up into bite sized bits! Each type of character has advantages and disadvantages that make the game play differently, but ultimately the player’s goals are the same, to save Silmaria and become King.
