Choosing Game Options
Cataclysm has four types of game options you can modify: audio, video, gameplay and key binding. Audio options change the sound content and quality, while video options change the video quality. Gameplay options change the winning conditions and key binding options change which commands are assigned to which keys on your keyboard.

To accept the default option settings:

  • On the Main screen, click Single-Player or Multiplayer. Any new game you create will use the default option settings.

    To change options:

    1. On the Main screen, click Options.
    2. On the Options screen, click the button associated with the type of option you want to change (Audio, Video, Gameplay or Key Bindings); then select the options you want.
    3. When you've selected options, click Accept! When the Main screen appears, you can then decide whether to play a single- or multiplayer game.
    Playing single-player games
  • On the Main screen, click Single Player.

Once you've chosen to play a single-player game, you must then decide whether to create and play a new game or play a saved game. If you decide to create and play a new game, the options you selected are applied to the new game. If you decide to play a saved game, the saved game's options override the current option settings.

To create a new single-player game:

    1. On the Main screen, click Single-Player.
    2. On the Setup Game screen, click New Game.

If you want to change the options, click Options, select the audio, video, gameplay and key binding options you want, and then click Accept!

    3. Click the Game Difficulty you want.
    4. Click Start.
    To play a saved game:
    1. On the Main screen, click Single-Player.
    2. On the Setup Game screen, click Load Game, and the available games are displayed.
    3. In the list of available games, click the saved game you want to play.
    4. Click Load.
    Playing multiplayer games
Once you've selected the audio, video, gameplay and key binding options you want, you can start a multiplayer game.

    To start a multiplayer game:

  • On the Main screen, click Multiplayer.

Once you've chosen to play a multiplayer game, you must then decide whether to play a skirmish against one or more computer opponents and no human opponents, play one or more human opponents using a LAN (local area network) or play one or more human opponents using the Internet. You can also choose to play a saved multiplayer game or watch a recorded game.

To start a new multiplayer skirmish:

    1. On the Main screen, click Multiplayer.
    2. On the Multiplayer screen, click Skirmish vs. CPU.
    3. On the Game Setup screen, select the basic, advanced, and resource options you want by clicking the respective Basic Options, Advanced Options, and Resource Options buttons.
    4. Click Start Skirmish!
To start a new multiplayer LAN game:
    1. On the Main screen, click Multiplayer.
    2. On the Multiplayer screen, click LAN.
    3. On the Play LAN screen, click in the Name box, and then type the name you want to use.
    4. Click the IPX LAN or TCP/IP LAN button (based on the type of LAN across which you'll be playing).
    5. Click Go! and the Lobby screen appears.

If you're hosting the LAN game, click Create Game, select the options you want, and then click Create Game. The Waiting for Players screen appears.

When all the players have joined, click Start Game.
      -or-
If you're joining the LAN game, click the game you want to join and then click Join. The Waiting for Players screen appears.
When all the players have joined, the game starts when the host clicks Start Game.

When you play using the Internet, you must decide if you're going to host the game or join a game another player is hosting. The host creates the game, setting the options and ultimately starting the game. When creating a multiplayer game, you should create the appropriate room based on the level of difficulty. For example, you shouldn't create a very difficult game in a beginner's room. If you're joining a game, you can look through the rooms until you find the type of game you want to play or the players with whom you want to play.

To start an new Internet game:

    1. On the Main screen, click Multiplayer.
    2. On the Multiplayer screen, click Internet.
    3. On the Login screen, click in the Name box and type your WON.net user name
    4. If you're not a registered WON.net user, click New Account, and follow the on-screen instructions. Once you've completed registration, you'll be returned to the Login screen. Your WON.net user name and password should be displayed.
    5. On the Login screen, click in the Password box and type your WON.net password.
    6. Click the Not Behind Firewall, Behind Firewall or Auto-Detect (if you're not sure if you're behind a firewall or not) button.
    7. Click Launch. The Lobby screen appears. At this point, you must decide whether to host or join a game.
If you've decided to host an Internet game, you'll need to decide in which room you want to create your game. If you're a beginning player, you'll want to create your game in a room intended for beginners instead of a room frequented by experienced players.

To host a multiplayer Internet game:

    1. On the Lobby screen, click Rooms.
    2. In the Available Rooms list, click the room you want to join, and then click Join Room.
    3. On the Lobby screen, click Games.
    4. On the Available Games screen, click Create Game.
    5. On the Setup Game screen, select the basic, advanced and resource options you want, and then click Create Game. The Game Lobby screen appears with your name displayed.
    6. When all the players you're expecting (or all the players you want) are in the lobby, click Start Game. The Choose a Server screen appears.
    7. Click on the server you want to use and then click Go!
If you've decided to join an Internet game, you'll need to find the room where you want to play (or where the host has told you the game will be played).

To join a multiplayer Internet game:

    1. On the Lobby screen, click Rooms.
    2. In the Available Rooms list, click the room you want to join, and then click Join Room.
    3. On the Lobby screen, click Games.
    4. On the Available Games screen, click the game you want to join, and then click Go! The Game Lobby screen appears with your name displayed in the player list.
    5. Wait for the host to click Start Game.
